Cutting julkaisi matkakertomuksensa Glimpses of Scandinavia and Russia vuonna 1887 sadan kappaleen painoksena. Siinä kuvataan vankilavierailua odotustuntien piristyksenä seuraavasti:
The waiting hours are only relieved by a visit to the prison, - an interesting, but certainly not a very cheering, experience. We were taken through many different rooms and workshops, where prisoners were busily engaged at their various trades. Everywhere throughout the building, upon our approach, they rose and remained standing while in our presence. We peeped at those in solitary confinement, through small eyeholes in the doors. They all seemed brutish animals; showing, with but one exception, no sign of intelligence. This one stared at us through a pair of large glasses with his whole soul. His black eyes haunt me still!Helsingissä Cutting ei kuitenkaan suunnannut Viaporin sellejä kurkkimaan vaan vieraili ortodoksisessa kirkossa ja tuomiokirkossa. Lähtiessään hän taitaa kuvata Suomenlinnaa kirjoittaessaan
The fortifications on all the shore and islands, which even at this distance from the capital begin to defend the approach to its port, are most extensive and mysterious.
