Amerikkalainen Helsingissä 1897

New York Tribune antoi kuvaliitteessään 12.9.1897 kokonaisen sivun Helsinki-katsaukselle. Nimimerkki I. N. F. tuntuu nauttineen kaupungissa jotain vettä vahvempaa tai tulleen palkatuksi matkailunedistämisen toimistoon. Hän totesi muun muassa
The visitor's amazement over the unexpected glory of Helsingfors increases during every hour of his stay in this remarkable city. There is good architecture on every side. There is a spacious architecture filled with good statuary and flanked with handsome hotels and business structures. There is an imposing theatre modelled after the Dresden Opera House. There are large hospitals equipped with the most scientific appliances for surgery. There are polytechnic schools and educational institutions without number. The public squares are worthy of a city of the highest artistic taste, and the residential quarter shows every sign of refinement and taste. Helsingfors may be one of the smallest, but it is also one of the handsomest of European capitals.
Täytyy kyllä myöntää, että Dresdenin oopperatalosta tulee Svenska Teatern mieleen.
