Naisasiaa ja virolainen seikkailija

Yllä olevan kuvan löysin aikanaan NYPL:n kuvakokoelmia haravoidessani. Osui hakuini, sillä vasemmalla on "Elsa Hakovanky (Finland)". Onneksi oli digitoitu myös kuvan takapuoli, josta sukunimeksi hahmottui uskottavampi Hakovaara. Kuva on otettu Budapestissa vuonna 1913 järjestetystä kansainvälisestä naisten äänioikeuskonfferenssista. Verkkokirjallisuuden opuksesta The History of Woman Suffrage, Volume VI selviää, että Suomesta oli paikalla 15 osallistujaa.

Meillähän oli äänioikeus jo saatu. Vasemmalla näkyy koko sivun juttu sanomalehdestä The San Fransico Call päiväyksellä 21.7.1907, jossa hehkutetaan maailman ensimmäisiä "kongressinaisia" eli kansanedustajiamme. Tavanomaisesta amerikkalaisesta tekstistä poiketen kirjoittajalla Ivan Narodny on paikallistuntemusta, sillä hän kertoo

Last winter, at the time of the women's political campaign, I was hiding from the Russian secret police in Helsingfors and Viborg, the largest cities of Finland. Most of those who aided me at that time were Finnish women who are much more radical and revolutionary in their political faith than the men. Some of those women who helped me to do my political work for Russia, concealing me from the Russian searchers, are now members of tho diet, and so I have had the best opportunity for thorough acquaintance with their brave and original work in politics.

One time last winter the Russian police agents had found out my hiding place in Viborg and my immediate arrest had been ordered. It seemed utterly impossible to escape for every street and exit was watched by detectives.

One of the bravest of the Finnish women knew of my danger and made up her mind to help me to escape. She put some woman's clothing in a little bag and came to the hotel in Viborg where I was staying. She rushed into my room and urged me to disguise, myself in these clothes and go with her as her old mother. "Hurry," she said, "you have no time to lose." I followed her advice and quickly donning the queer makeup walked out on her arm. Not one of the watching policemen guessed this trick and she brought me safely to her farmhouse. This woman is now a leader in the new congress.

Nimeä Ivan Narodny en ollut koskaan kuullut, joten sarjaan "kuva miehestä, josta en ollut koskaan kuullut" jatketta oikealla. (Löytyi täältä) Verkosta löytyi jopa osumia, joiden mukaan hän oli merkittävä vaikuttaja Suomen itsenäistymisessä. Hufvudstadsbladet kuittaa miehen kuitenkin 23.5.1908 virolaiseksi seikkailijaksi, joka oli Venäjällä tuomittu väärän rahan levittämisestä pari vuotta aiemmin. Alkuperäiseltä nimeltään hän oli Jaan Sibul ja sanomalehtikirjoittajakin ollut jo Virossa.
